A time may come when prizes for architects will wither along with bountiful media coverage much of which is supported by advertising for building products. A/E firms are obliged to have marketing staff to push their goods in competion with others doing the same, and critics must toe the line of promotion above detailed critiques. The hegemon of real estate development cannot be resisted if a firm wants to become more than a shade-tree garage with a few ill-paid underlings propping up a principal or two who spend most of their time hustling for work while battling gushers of change orders milking the cow of "inadequate documentation."
Nothing defeats quality and affordable architecture than prizes granted by organizations typically funded by rich supporters, same as those like Nobel bestowng a plethora of sciences, arts, and whatever dominates the planetary gush of war and peace and justice and gender and governance.
Don't expect prizes for the catastrophic disasters of Ukraine, earthquakes, tsunamis, mass shootings, autocratic regimes, environmental degradation, but do expect bankable rewards for those who perpetrate genocide, exploitation, injustice, sexism, racism, wealth accumulation, cutbacks in social services, data theft, erection of supertalls and screwball edifices.
And never expect a prize winner, overlooking Sartre, to reject the humiliating dishonor.
John Berger also stands out for his protest of the Booker Prize when it was granted to him. And let's not forget the virtues of the KLF/K-Foundation Art Award.
