The Trump regality culminated a centuries-long accumulation of nearly-uncheckable power in the US Presidency despite the national founders' intention to avoid concentrated corruption in royalty.
Veneration of the highest executive office eventually overwhelmed checks and balances of the Constitution, as if what was written could not compete with what was desired in hearts and minds, a bigger than life-size statuary for ruling the populace not serving it.
Blaming the grandiosities of entertainment and advertizing for the rise of a risable cartoon character to squat in the White House and play infantile games on twitter, cursing and sweet-talking on the telephone, jitter-bugging and tiny hand-wobbling at rallies, hectoring at pressers and lecturing dinners for fat cats and hugging-up celebrities and grabbing unmentionables and fooling around with voluptuaries, pigging out on gut-busters and shutting down critics, how did this Crazy King George get inside the people's defenses against holy-roller skepticism of grandstanding appeals to worship a balloon of foul air?
Say what you like about the Congressional spectacle of impeachment and conviction version 2, there is still much room to examine the innards, now infected by official neglect, of the citizenry yearning for excitement, angst and vitriol over reflection, generosity and responsibility.
A madness of crowds has gradually taken root along with the cultish dementia of the Temple of the Presidency.
