Apple's long-running claim to protect user privacy with its devices, announcing that it cannot decrypt even under legal orders, is swiftly being undermined.
Not that this ruse is unusual in tech's open promises to the public and what it reveals in secret to authorities.
For decades this is the disinformation large computer-related corporations espouse, from IBM to Microsoft to Lockheed Martin to what appears to be all of them who rely on government contracts for excellent profits.
The commonplace practice of deception, lying, preening, bragging of public service is as old as the corruptive influence of national security which means as old as governments, as rulers, as privileged leaders and their agents of which there are many serving chicanery as a topmost dish composed of customary ingredients of sanctimony, revolving door jobs, sweetheart contracts, back-scratching, deal-cutting, veneration of officialdom, worship of Mammon, blessing of The Devil in temples of rectitude icons, meaning I Con, You Lose.
Favorite justifications are the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers, the Revolution, the Courts, the Congress, the Presidency, the Law, the Faith, the Truth, the Banks, the Markets, the Best and Brightest, the Tradition, the Way Things are Supposed to Be.
Got that? Then accept the need for official secrecy to exclude those who cannot be trusted with secrecy about what takes place out of sight, day and night, year after year, timelessly.
